Why reading is so important?

Reading is a one-way communication by a writer to a reader and is the interaction between the text and the reader.

The flow of information, the choice of words, the level of imagination portrayed, the thrill of the article and the type of genre used by the writer are some of the main factors which attract readers. In this article, I will emphasize the importance of reading in our lives.

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” – Joseph Addison.
Reading helps us in becoming a better version of ourselves. Each completed article or novel results in the improvement of the analytical and cognitive skills and there comes a sense of enlightenment in our thoughts and deeds.

Most importantly, reading helps us in understanding ourselves better. The type of genre one likes reading gives an idea about the choices and the possible inclination of the person among the various genres available.

Reading can be in the form of print media like Newspaper, Magazines, Books etc. or in the form of digital media like reading on Laptops, Tablets, Mobiles etc.

Both types of reading are considered good however one must read different genres in order to have a broad knowledge and understanding of the things around us. In comparison, a reader reading different genres like fiction, psychology, biography etc. has an edge over a reader reading only fiction or only biographies.

Reading different genres and authors gives us an insight into the purpose of our life. Also, it improves our imagination and creativity. I have heard people saying that while reading Dan Brown’s novels, the entire scene of the chapter plays in their mind in parallel to reading them in the novel and that shows the brilliance of the author in describing the surroundings of the places which the lead character visits.

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.”  says A Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.
Reading gives you mastery on the language in which you are reading. Most importantly when you read articles and novels in a language other than your native one, it forces you to start thinking in the language itself in your mind. It boosts your understanding and fluency in the language.

Reading also helps us in paving a path from the experiences of others. We have a long civilization before us and there is so much to gain from our past generations. The inventions they made, the path they followed in their lifetime to become popular, the steps they have taken in order to make the world a better place are few of the topics which we can gain from our previous generations.

Simultaneously, we can also gain so much by looking into the type of work people are doing currently across the Globe like the type of governance, the tax system, the organization set up, renewable energy implementation, protection of species, space travel launches etc.

While interacting with others, I often find a great difference in the maturity and understanding based on the number of books and the type of genres they have read. There is a significant depth in their thoughts and they see the world differently after reading and understanding from our ancestors.

“Reading is an act of civilization; it’s one of the greatest acts of civilization because it takes the free raw material of the mind and builds castles of possibilities.” – Ben Okri
Sometimes, I dream of a society where we interact with strangers and would ask them about how many books they have read in their lifetime instead of asking them their age, religion or nationality.

I found the website Goodreads very helpful in planning my reading and you can also give it a try if not using already. The ratings, comments and vast collection proves very worthy to the readers.

Now, I am finishing the article with a very simple question to you: How many books have you read so far?

Do let me know your answer in below comment section.
